First in the House

First in the House by Lorna Rainey tells the inspiring true story of Joseph Hayne Rainey, the first Black man to serve in the United States Congress. Born into slavery in South Carolina, Joseph’s future seemed limited. But with courage and determination, he changed his own life and American history.

After gaining freedom, Joseph worked hard to build a successful life. When the Civil War forced him to flee to Bermuda, he and his wife, Susan, created a thriving business. But even with success, Joseph never forgot those who were still struggling. When the war ended, he returned to the U.S. to help newly freed Black citizens gain the rights they deserved. He entered politics and, in 1870, became the first Black Congressman.
